Well over half the churches I visited were built before 1911. Buffalo's skyline was much different then. The Niagara Mohawk Building(1912), Liberty Bank Building(1925), Central Terminal(1929) and City Hall(1931) were all yet to be.
1827
The Union Meeting House, later the Breckenridge St. Presbyterian, is now vacant and has not served as a church for nearly a century. Nevertheless, at 173 years, it is still the oldest standing church building in Buffalo. In contrast with the Michigan St. Baptist Church below, this building was once used as a detention center for "illegal" Chinese aliens from Canada.
1849
Michigan Ave. Baptist Church, before the Civil War escaping slaves were hidden in a concealed area in the basement of the church until they could escape to freedom in Canada.
1886
St. Louis, this church was dedicated in 1886. It is the oldest Roman Catholic parish in Buffalo.
1897
First Presbyterian was dedicated in 1897. If you have been to Kleinhan's you've seen this beautiful church.
1907
Corpus Christi, near the Broadway Market. The Father Justin Rosary Hour got its start here in 1931.
1925
St. Joseph's on Main St., near the University of Buffalo.
1940
St. Aloysius on Cleveland Drive
